About 400 houses, shops and other structures were
demolished by the Ogun Government, in a bid to pave way for the
expansion and reconstruction of the Sango-Ijoko-Akute-Ojodu Road in the
Ifo Local Government Area of the state.
The state Commissioner for Works, Mr Olalekan Adegbite, who led a
government delegation to the area said the project was part of efforts
aimed at improving the socio economic development of the area and part
of the urban renewal effort of the state government.
The 32 km road, which is estimated to gulp about N52 billion
including compensation to affected property owners, is also expected to
be completed in the next 30 months.
The road linking Sango, Ijoko, Akute Alagbole and Lambe had been
neglected by past administrations in the state but the current
administration said it is determined to fix it.
However, several persons have been displaced and are said to be
without any alternatives as regards shelter. To this, the Commissioner
explained that adequate notice was given to property owners, after
which, men and equipment were mobilised to site for the demolition of
structures on the right of way.
The commissioner further explained that the demolitions were
necessary as the road would be expanded to a six-lane highway with two
bridges and three fly-overs.
The project is expected to be completed in the next 30 months and a section of it tolled.
The government has however promised adequate compensation for those
affected by the reconstruction exercise expected to be completed in the
next two and half years.
