Supreme Court Stops PDP’s Planned Campaign in Anambra

Picture of a Gavel.
The Supreme Court in Nigeria has stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from going ahead with its planned flag-off campaign for the November 16 governorship election in Anambra State.
Vice President, Namadi Samabo was to lead the Tony Nwoye flag-off campaign in Awka on Saturday.
The appeal was filed by Nicholas Ukachukwu challenging the decision of the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt which affirmed Nwoye as the candidate of the PDP for the November polls.
After extracting an undertaking from counsel to the PDP, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Nwoye, the court presided over by Justice Ibrahim Muhammed Tanko, directed the counsel to advise their clients appropriately until Monday November 4 when the court would hear the appeal.
The Supreme Court also stopped Mr. Andy Ubah from joining in the appeal seeking to decide who the authentic flag bearer of the PDP in Anambra State is, between Tony Nwoye and Nicholas Ukachukwu.
Andy Ubah had through his counsel, Lateef Fagbemi, brought an application seeking to be joined as an interested party in appeal between Tony Nwoye and Nicholas Ukachukwu which will be coming up before the court on Monday.

UK Lecturers Embark On A Day Strike

It appears industrial actions in the education sector may not be limited to Nigeria’s Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Lecturers and staff of many universities across the United Kingdom under the umbrella of Universities and College Unions (UCU) embarked on a one day strike in protest of pay cuts on Thursday.
At the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), students and lecturers appeared to be united in the course.
Our correspondent in the city of London, Doris Okenwa monitored activities in some universities and confirmed that academic activities were indeed disrupted by the strike.
The lecturers and staff maintained that there has been a consistent drop in the last 13 years despite huge funds being generated in the sector with fees for international students placed at over 10,000 pounds.
A senior lecturer of Economics at SOAS, Stephanie Blankenburg said the take home pays does not meet rising costs of living adding that the proposed one per cent increase by employers is not good enough.
Another angle to the strike action is the call for increased funding of universities as austerity measures have made university education in the UK astronomical.
This could herald a decline in face to face learning and a prompt a rise in online degrees.

Singer Chris Brown Heads To Rehab After Assault Charge

R&B singer Chris Brown is entering rehab “to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior,” the singer’s representatives said on Tuesday, after Brown was arrested and charged with assault over the weekend.
Brown, 24, pleaded not guilty on Monday to misdemeanor assault after police reports said the singer and his bodyguard both punched a man in the face outside a Washington hotel, where Brown had a nightclub appearance.
“Chris Brown has elected to enter a rehab facility. His goal is to gain focus and insight into his past and recent behavior, enabling him to continue the pursuit of his life and his career from a healthier vantage point,” the singer’s representatives said in a statement, a day after Brown appeared in court.
Brown is due back in court on November 20, and if convicted, faces a maximum of six months in jail and a $1,000 fine.
The Grammy-winning “Look at Me Now” singer has faced a string of legal troubles and has been on probation since 2009, when he assaulted pop singer Rihanna, his then-girlfriend. His sentence included domestic violence counseling.
His probation was revoked over the summer after he was charged in a hit-and-run traffic accident in Los Angeles, but reinstated after the singer committed to another 1,000 hours of community service.
