Doctors suspended over deaths of patients

Two doctors have been suspended for “professional misconduct” and “infamous practice” that led to the death of two people.

Both doctors, Charles Ikeji and Terhemba Lan, will not be able to practise medicine from February 18 for six months, ruled a tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, which regulates the practice and teaching of medicine and dentistry. .
The tribunal heard Ikeji, in practice since 1984, operated on a 60-year-old hypertensive patient using ketamine, a drug used to induce sleep during surgery but cautioned against in cases of high blood pressure. .
The patient died and he was suspended by an investigation panel of the council in May 2019. The tribunal found him guilty on four counts—that he “exhibited incompetence in the way he managed the patient”, “failed to do all that was necessary for the patient” and “failed to conduct his medical duty” in accordance with standards. .
The tribunal also found Lan, almost 20 years a doctor, guilty on four counts of misconduct. Lan was investigated by a panel of the council and suspended last July for leaving his hospital “open, knowing there was no competent person” to oversee the hospital in his absence. .
Lan was unavailable on 29 March 2018 at his private clinic-and-maternity practice in Bwari when a patient visited and his absence “enabled a person not registered as a medical doctor to attend to a patient in your care,” the tribunal said. .
In the absence of any doctor overseeing the hospital, a community health worker attended to the patient—and even signed a form referring the patient to National Hospital and also a certificate of death when the patient died. 📷: TheNation

Californian Mother reunites with son kidnapped 21 years ago

A California mother, Maria Mancia, whose son was abducted in 1995 reunited with him on Thursday after 21 years.
The last time Mancia saw her son was when he was just 18 months old and only had a single photo of him.
Her son, Steve Hernandez, who is now 22 years old, was found living in Puebla, Mexico, by investigators in the San Bernardino County District Attorney's Child Abduction Unit and on Thursday morning was brought to the U.S. to meet his mother for an emotional reunion.
"Now this anguish I've carried is gone now that I have my son back," Mancia said. "I spent 21 years looking for him not knowing anything."
The SBC District Attorney's Child Abduction Unit had been looking for Hernandez through the years, searching for him in several states until investigators received a strong tip in February that he was in Mexico.

According to authorities, his father, Valentin Hernandez, is said to be missing and believed to be dead.
Investigator Karen Cragg, who led the search, said they had to approach Steve Hernandez delicately.
"We used a ruse to contact him. We told him we were investigating his father and we needed his DNA to help locate his father," Cragg told The Associated Press on Thursday. "We didn't want to scare him off. We weren't sure what the circumstances were down there. We had to tread very carefully."
According to police reports, Mancia and Valentin Hernandez had been living with their son Steve Hernandez in Rancho Cucamonga, California, in 1995 but were having relationship problems. Mancia said she came home from work one day to find both the elder Hernandez and their son missing and all of their photos of the boy, including an ultrasound gone as well.

She immediately reported the boy missing and the investigation had been active ever since, first with the Sheriff's Department, then with DA's investigators.

Once investigators located Steve in Mexico, DNA sample was obtained in February to acertain that he was truly Mancia's son.
Once they got a positive match, Cragg drove straight to Mancia's house to give her the good news.
"She began to cry. She said she couldn't believe he was still alive."
Because Steve Hernandez is a U.S. citizen, there were no immigration troubles returning him to the U.S., Cragg said. He had no personal documents at all, but his mother had his birth certificate and more.
The boy's father had told him that his mother abandoned the two of them.

Steve Hernandez  said:
"I lived all these years without my mother, then to find out she's alive in another country, it's emotional."
He said he plans to stay in the U.S. and hopes to attend law school, which he already started in Mexico. He hugged his crying mother and wiped tears from her eyes

TRANSGENDER SIBLINGS!!! Transgender brother and sister swap sexes one month apart

A brother and sister have swapped genders after they came out to their parents as transgender just a month apart. At just three years old, Aly McGarrity was a tomboy who enjoyed playing football with the boys, while older sibling Russie, then 5, preferred playing dress up with the girls.
For Russie, now known as Rai, the next few years were hard, her mother Beth told Good Housekeeping.
At high school, she was bullied by other students but refused to bow to pressure to conform and adopted an androgynous look.
'I would rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not,' she told her parents.
Mrs McGarrity, from Connecticut, says she always knew her children were a little different.
But she, and husband Russ, became worried about Rai who slowly spiraled into depression.

Mrs McGarrity said her school struggled to understand her struggle and even threatened to expel her after she ran into the girl's toilets.
'I did not choose this for myself,' she had told her mom. 'I wish there was a way that I could not be this way.'
While the family were concerned with Rai, unbeknownst to anyone, Aly was also struggling with gender.

Aly, now known as Gavin, had always been a bit of a tomboy but deep down he knew there was more to it.
After researching transgender on the internet, he realized that he had been born the wrong sex. He wanted to be a boy.
And it was Gavin who took the brave step to come out to his parents first.
Just a few days before his 15th birthday, he broke the news to Rai that he was transgender. Then, they broke the news to their mom.
'I've figured out what's going on with me,' Gavin told her. 'I know that I'm transgender. I've always wanted to be a boy. I never told you this, but when I was little, I would go to sleep and wish that I'd wake up a boy.
'Every time we did the wishbone at Thanksgiving and I won, I would wish that I was a boy.'
A month later, Rai confessed that she too was transgender and both siblings, after receiving counselling, have decided to go ahead with gender reassignment surgery.
Their parents said nothing had changed as far as how much they love their children.
Gavin, now 17, said that it had been his parents' unwavering support and unconditional support that had allowed him and Rai, now 20, to become the people they wanted to be.

'Even in the years when (mum) didn't know what was going on, before I came out, I knew that all she cared about, at the end of the day, was me and Rai being happy,' he said.
Father Russ said he had always hoped to have a boy and a girl.
'As it so happened, we did have one of each — just in a different order than we originally thought,' he said.
Gavin is now due to undergo surgery to remove his breasts while Rai has already had a painful facial surgery to appear more feminine.
Rai, who has a boyfriend, also video blogs about her life as a transgender woman and has more than 6.5million views.

Mrs McGarrity said: 'People ask me what I've lost, but I don't feel that I've lost anything. I have my son and daughter the way they should be'

World Bank urges Buhari to remove fuel subsidy now

The World Bank has urged President Buhari to remove petroleum subsidy now as the price of crude oil has declined drastically. The position of the World Bank was made known by the bank's leader Economist, John Litwack at the launch of the new edition of Nigeria Economic Report, the World Bank’s Lead Economist.

He said the best time to remove fuel subsidy is now when global crude oil price is at its lowest level, noting that the Bank foresaw continuous decline in global crude oil price.
“The fuel subsidy appears to have vast modest benefits for the majority of citizens, but the costs are quite high. There is a strong tendency for the cost of fuel subsidy to increase over time as increasing domestic demand for petrol outpaces growth in oil output or revenues. The $35 billion cost of fuel subsidy during 2010 – 2014 was one of the reasons Nigeria was unable to accumulate a fiscal reserve in the Excess Crude Account that could have protected the country from the recent oil price shock.”he said

Prophet T.B Joshua fails to honor court invite, case adjourned till Dec. 11th

We brought you a news earlier about the hearing on the suit against Synagogue Pastor, T.B Joshua and his engineers over the September 2014 church building collapse has been adjourned to December 11th by Justice Lawal Akapo of the Lagos State High Court. The resumed hearing of the case was meant to take place this morning but T.B. Joshua and his engineers, Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun failed to show up in court today.

Counsel to the Engineers, Oluwaseun Abimbola, told the court that they were absent because they were not served with court papers. Reacting to this position, the Lagos State's Attorney General, Adeniji Kazeem said no valid physical addresses were found for the contractors, which he said was reason that the Ministry of Justice could not locate or serve the court papers.

The presiding judge ordered that proper court notices be served to the engineers within 72 hours, and advised their counsel to inform them to take the court proceedings seriously as their trial is of a criminal case. 117 people, mostly Nigerians and South Africans, died in the Church building collapse.
